A gate is a movable object or structure that controls movement in and out of a place. These structures are mainly made of wood, metal and polyvinyl chloride. Prisons, churches, schools, hospitals, game reserves, lunches, homes, buildings and industries have gates. Gates are important in the provision of security by controlling and keeping off unauthorized people from getting in a place. Gates are of two types; swing and sliding gates. Sliding gates are gates that move sideways on a metal bar by use of rollers while swing gates are gates that move in a curve so as to give accessibility. Swing gates are mainly in pairs. Swing gates are more attractive. Swing gates open in a manner similar to a person opening his or her hands so as to give a visitor a warm welcoming. Visitors are more appealed by swinging gates compared to sliding gates. Sliding gates appear as if they are supposed to be used in industries. The equipment used in the establishment of a sliding gate is visible making the gate less attractive. Sliding gates also need regular oiling and greasing so that the gate is able to slide on the rail. This oil on the rail makes the gate appear less clean.
It is easier to install a swing gate. Homes and industrial swinging gate only require hinges or flexible joints which attaches them to the outer posts. Swinging gates are therefore cheaper to set up and do not lead to huge destruction on the property. Sliding gates must be set up on a concrete foundation hence a lot of excavation work is involved. Digging of holes and trenches during sliding gate setting up leads to destruction on the property. The cost of installation is also high since a lot of poles, hinges, rollers and concrete are needed.
Swing gates produce less noise. Swing gates have few hinges and pulleys to attach them to the side posts. Swing gates will hence give less noise when they are being opened and closed. Sliding gates have a higher number of hinges and pulleys. This equipment will give a lot of noise due to friction especially when not well greased. The friction leads to wear and tear of the sliding gate. A swinging gate is also easier to lubricate compared to a sliding gate.
Swing gates can be set up in hilly areas. A swing gate is easier to open on a hilly place compared to the sliding gate. Sliding gates need more physical energy to control its movement along a hill while a swing gate is swung out more easily.
